Inspired by Patrick Collison’s bookshelf, I am cataloging the current books in my personal library. (I recently moved Berkeley, so unpacking boxes was a good excuse to take inventory.) My bookshelf includes about 460 books, of which 18% are fiction and 82% are nonfiction. This list includes both “read” and “unread” books. I haven’t yet finished about 50 books on this list.
The nice thing about taking stock of my personal library is that I get to “quantify” my reading habits. I was surprised to discover, for example, that about 25% of all my nonfiction books are about biology. This was surprising because I don’t enjoy reading about biology and find that most books on the subject spend too many pages explaining what a gene is, etc. The second most popular category on my bookshelf is ancient Rome, followed by general biographies. My favorite authors, judged simply by how many of their books I own, are Gay Talese and Walter Isaacson (5 each), followed by Erik Larson and David Grann (3 each). I admire each author for different reasons, but it’s telling that two of them are journalists of different forms (“New Journalism” with Talese & narrative investigations with Grann), and the other two write deeply researched biographies and histories (Isaacson & Larson). I’ve always admired writers who spend an inordinate amount of time on research, and think Robert Caro should be better represented here.
When I shared my bookshelf with Claude and asked it for recommendations, it suggested The Invention of Air by Steven Johnson, The Making of the Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes, and The Metaphysical Club by Louis Menand. The first two were already on my list, but I had never heard of the third. (And I promptly ordered all three of them from AbeBooks.) Overall, this seems like a good sign that a digital bookshelf can be used to find more books based on my interests.
